Formula
FI Number = Annual Spending ÷ Safe Withdrawal Rate
The core FIRE calculation answers one question: how much money allows me to choose how I spend my time? By keeping spending low and savings rate high, you lower the target and shorten the time to reach it.
There are many versions of FIRE—from lean to fat to coast. The right plan depends on your values, risk tolerance and desired lifestyle. Use this tool to explore the numbers before committing to a strategy.
FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. It is a movement focused on aggressively saving and investing a high percentage of income so you reach a point where your investments can support your lifestyle without requiring full-time work.
A common rule is 25 times your annual spending (the inverse of a 4% safe withdrawal rate). This calculator uses that framework to estimate your FI number and how long reaching it may take.
The 4% rule suggests you can safely withdraw 4% of your portfolio in your first year of retirement, adjusting for inflation each year, with a high probability of the money lasting 30 years. It is a planning guideline, not a guarantee.
